Spring Creek Middle School students Bentley Haye and Braden Elfe are Nevada’s top competitors in the 2024 American Scholastic Challenge.
The American Scholastic Achievement League, originally established by a committee of middle school teachers to encourage students to demonstrate their knowledge and critical thinking skills, has evolved into a prestigious national contest since its inception in 2002.
This year, a total of 3,800 6th grade students and 9,000 8th grade students competed in the Scholastic Challenge, with national average scores of 55% and 53%.
Haye, a 6th grader, and Elfe, an 8th grader, showcased exemplary performance, securing the titles of Nevada State 6th Grade Champion and Nevada State 8th Grade Champion. Haye achieved an impressive score of 85%, while Elfe excelled with an 88% score. Notably, this marks Elfe’s second victory in the competition, having previously claimed the 6th grade State Champion title in 2022.
For the last three consecutive years, Spring Creek Middle School has produced the Nevada State Champion. Under the leadership of Ms. Aubrey Moe and Dr. Amy Price, Spring Creek Middle School has consistently demonstrated excellence in the Scholastic Challenge since 2014.
Principal Salli McDermott expressed her delight at the students' achievements, stating, "Participating in the Scholastic Challenge has become a cherished tradition at Spring Creek Middle School. We are immensely proud of Bentley and Braden for their outstanding performance, as well as all 60 students who represented our school with dedication and determination. Their success reflects the hard work and commitment to excellence that permeates our school community."
Haye and Elfe, along with their families, learned of the achievement at the May 21 Elko County School District school board meeting, where they were recognized for their achievements.
The Elko County School District extends its congratulations to Haye, Elfe, and the entire Spring Creek Middle School community for their remarkable achievements in the 2024 American Scholastic Challenge.
